What are the benefits of an LCD TV?
If you are upgrading your home entertainment system you may surprised by the vast number of systems and monitors available. The two you will most likely ultimately choose between are a plasma TV and an LCD TV. This article will concern itself with the benefits of LCD screens and not with other screens and monitors which use other technologies. LCD stands for liquid crystal display. The liquid crystals are cells sandwiched between two panes of glass. The crystals respond to electrical charges by twisting and thus filtering the white light that comes from the lamp that is behind the screen or from the rear projection system. Certain wavelengths of light produce corresponding colours and so each crystal cell blocks some, or all, of the light spectrum to produce the desired colour within that cell. Unlike a plasma screen, which requires electricity to power and light every pixel, an LCD uses fluorescent back lighting and so consumes less electricity and is cheaper to run in the longer term. As a result of this design, an LCD monitor is slim and flat panel displays are common. For those who prefer not to have a television in constant view, a projection system will be less obvious and LCD projector assemblies are compact. A further advantage is that screen burn-in is not an issue.

Burn-in is a permanent etching of colour onto the display that comes about when the picture on the screen is stationary for a long period of time. An LCD TV does not suffer from this. An important consideration for many television buyers is how the new system will interface with the home’s gaming system. If you, or your children, are big gamers, an LCD TV may be preferable. LCD screens provide a brighter picture and do not suffer from glare in the way that plasma TVs can. Further, a brightly lit room will not wash out the picture and force you to close the curtains on a sunny day. Next and maybe most importantly, as we amalgamate much of our home technology, are the benefits for computer use. When computer programmes are displayed on a flat panel television, they might flicker on other technologies, but not on an LCD. LCD screens have more pixels on average per square inch which means that large amounts of information and static information can be displayed effectively. This also relates back to the gaming issue. Additionally, LCD televisions on the market are typically HD ready and so will allow you to see, and appreciate, the benefits of high definition television in a way that standard televisions do not. The benefits of LCD systems are manifold and if you are upgrading your home entertainment system, you will notice the difference immediately.
