A Guide To Choosing Your Wedding Dress

Every bride wants their dress to be flattering and for this reason there can be a lot of pressure to find the perfect wedding dress. It is estimated that you should allow at least 6 months for this process since it can take a while to try on different styles and colours and find the perfect gown. You also need to allow time for fittings and alterations to ensure your chosen dress fits you like a glove!

Colours and Styles

These days wedding dresses come in all different colours and styles and it is important that you try on a good selection and shop around. Try to pick a dress that you will feel comfortable in and that makes you feel like yourself. The last thing you want to feel on your wedding day is self conscious. Make sure that it fits you properly so that you do not spend the day hitching up your dress or pulling it down.

Whatever style you choose it is always worth bearing in mind how the dress looks from the back as this is how guests will see it during the ceremony. To get a good idea ask someone at the fittings to take a photo of you from behind so you can see the overall effect.

If you decide that you would like your dress to have a train then check that you can hook it up or remove it completely to allow you to move around and dance later in the day.

It may be a good idea to look through some wedding magazines before you go shopping to see what kind of style you like the look of. However do not restrict yourself to just one style; you may be surprised that something you have not considered before really suits you.

Do not feel that you have to wear a stereotypical wedding dress. Many brides opt for an off the peg dress from a department store in bright colours and fabrics. Remember that these days any colour goes so don’t feel you have to have white or ivory, choose something that suits your skin colouring and personality.

Tips for choosing the right Dress

1. Think about your venue

Before you even begin to think about choosing a wedding dress, you need to consider where you are getting married. Are you getting married on the beach, in a church or somewhere a little different? You need a dress and style that will suit the venue.

2. Think about the season

Take into consideration the time of year you are getting married. For example, you might want to choose something light for summer and perhaps something with sleeves in a thicker fabric for winter.

3. Think about your figure

No matter what size or shape you are you will be able to find a dress that flatters your figure. There are a wide range of necklines to suit different bust sizes as well as dresses that either skim or nip you in at the waist. The best way to find out what really suits your figure is to try on a range of styles before buying.

If you are pregnant then choose a dress that will be comfortable and find someone who can make any alterations needed last minute. You could opt for an empire line dress that will flatter your bump but still give you shape.

4. Remember to Accessorize!

These can include shoes, jewellery, a veil or hair accessories. Remember to wear your wedding shoes and underwear to any dress fittings to ensure that your dress will be the correct length and fit perfectly.

Whatever you opt for make sure that you stick to the budget that you have set yourself as it can be all too easy to get carried away!
