The Groom's Speech - Tips & Advice

Grooms Speech

One of the key elements to a wedding is the Grooms speech, but if you dread public speaking this may not be something you are looking forward to! The thought of making a wedding speech makes even the most experienced speaker nervous but there really is nothing to worry about. Below are a few key points that you should include when writing your speech to avoid missing anyone out.

What to Include

1. Welcome everyone and thank them for attending your special day.

2. You can then thank the Bride’s family for accepting you into their family and say how pleased you are to have married their daughter and that she is a credit to them. You should also welcome your new in-laws to your family.

3. Thank the Father of the Bride for his speech and comments.

4. Make sure that you thank your own parents as well as your new in laws for all their help organising and arranging the day. Remember to also thank any other people who have offered help in anyway too. You may like to give both Mothers and any family members that have helped a lot a small gift such as some flowers.

5. You can choose to comment on any funny or key moments from the day so far and stress how happy you are.

6. At this point you should tell your audience how you met your wife, if anything funny happened at the start of your relationship and how you have grown together. Make sure that you keep this clean as you will no doubt have a variety of age groups present.

7. Make sure that you address your Bride and tell her how beautiful she looks, how proud you are of her and how happy she has made you. If you do shed a tear, try not to feel embarrassed as this is a special moment between the two of you.

8. Thank the bridesmaids and give them a small gift to remember the day by.

9. Some Grooms like to propose a toast to their new bride before introducing their best man.

Tips on Delivering the Speech

To ensure that your speech goes as well as possible try to practise it beforehand. This will allow you to time how long it is and to make sure that you have included the important parts. You may like to practice in front of a friend who can tell you if it flows well and perhaps give you some advice on how to present it.

Make sure that it is not overly long, around 5 minutes is fine.

If you feel that you may forget parts then list some bullet points down on paper to help jog your memory.

Most importantly try to relax and have fun. If you smile at people and speak clearly and slowly they will not notice if you are nervous.

Last but not least...try not to drink too much prior to giving your speech! The odd one may help to calm your nerves but anymore and you may slur your words and ruin the day!

Good luck!
