The Best Man's Speech - Tips & Advice
As the best man there are a number of important tasks that you are expected to fulfil throughout the day. However perhaps one of the most important and the most daunting is given a speech! Many people feel under pressure to deliver a speech that is witty whilst also being emotional and sincere. Remember that the audience is on your side so relax, be confident and smile and you will do great.
If you are struggling to know what to write and who you need to include in your speech then we have compiled a list of the key points to avoid missing anyone out.
What to Include
1. Begin your speech by introducing yourself and telling people how you know the Groom. Try to be open and welcoming and remember to smile no matter how nervous you are. This will ensure that your audience warm to you.
2. Make sure that one of the first things you do is thank those who have played a key role in the day, such as the maid of honour, bridesmaids etc. You could also pay thanks to family members that have had an important part in the organisation of the day such as helping with the cake, food or decorations.
3. Now is the time to congratulate the happy couple and perhaps include some stories from times you have spent together and how they met. Try to keep this point sincere and include praise for the Groom and how pleased you are for him. Also make sure that you mention how beautiful the Bride looks! Often a best man will at this point make a joke about how lucky the Groom is to have found someone to put up with him, but this is entirely as your discretion.
4. Once you have got the serious part of your speech done you can move on to telling humorous stories and anecdotes of things you have got up to together. Remember that your audience will include people of all age groups so try to keep these relatively clean and avoid using any obscene language.
5. Some best men like to offer their advice at this point, be it sincere, amusing or both. If you do go for amusing then be sure to keep this light hearted to avoid offending anyone!
6. There may be family members or friends that could not attend the wedding and may have sent cards or messages to be read out. Some may even record a short video sending their congratulations. This is the time to read these messages out to the Bride and Groom.
7. At this point you should reiterate your thanks as well as your congratulations to the couple and finish your speech by proposing a toast to the new Bride and Groom. If the happy couple wish to cut the cake following your speech then introduce this.
By following these tips you should be easily able to write a speech that is both humorous and sincere. Above all remember to keep it clean and speak clearly and confidently and you speech should be a great success!
